Hundreds of activists in Toronto blocked access to a large Canadian weapons supplier to Israel earlier today.
Demonstrators chanted and held signs at the entrance to L3Harris Technologies weapons facility in Toronto on November 10. The company makes essential components for many of the weapons systems that are used by the Israeli military, including the bombs currently raining down on Gaza, said activists.
Dalia Awwad from the Palestinian Youth Movement said the company is complicit in the genocide of now more than 10,000 Palestinians, including thousands of children. “We’ll keep escalating till this genocide is ended and there's an arms embargo against Israel.”
Aidan Macdonald from Labour for Palestine said groups are answering a global call for solidarity.
“We are here to answer a call from Palestinian trade unions to shut down the arms trade with Israel, to stop our own complicity with genocide,” said Macdonald, adding that the demonstration was organized in partnership with World Beyond War Canada and Labour Against the Arms Trade.
“We are here to say no more. Enough is enough.”
Toronto was not the only L3 Harris location that faced disruption. The event was part of a global day of action to stop arming Israel, said Simon Black with Labour Against the Arms Trade, adding that simultaneous blockades were also held in Hamilton, Ottawa and Montreal. Additionally, Black said, there was also a blockade at the Lockheed Martin Canadian headquarters in Ottawa.
Today, Ottawa activists obstructed the entrance to Lockheed Martin Canada, the world’s largest arms-producing company. @LockheedMartin is complicit in Israel’s massacring of 10,500+ Palestinian civilians in the past 5 weeks. Black said the global demand by activists is for an immediate arms embargo on Israel — joining the call from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
“We want Canadians to be aware that companies that have bases in Canada are complicit in war crimes halfway around the world.”
