Ricochet Media joins the international community in condemnation of Israel’s August 10 targeted assassination of six journalists in Gaza.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 200 press members have now been killed in Gaza since 2023 — more than were killed worldwide in the previous three years combined.

Five Al Jazeera journalists were killed by an Israeli strike on their media tent in Gaza City on Sunday — among them well known 28-year-old correspondent Anas al-Sharif.

The other four Al Jazeera journalists killed are correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa, according to Al Jazeera.

Two others were also killed, the broadcaster said. Hospital officials named Mohammed al-Khaldi, a local freelance journalist, as one of them.

Israel had previously accused Sharif of being a member of Hamas’s military wing – something he and his employer Al Jazeera strongly denied. Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a media freedom group, said the allegations against Sharif were “baseless” and called on the international community to intervene.

The ongoing Israeli killings of journalists is part of systematic efforts to prevent reporting and documentation of human rights violations and war crimes, including mass starvation and the killing of civilians, taking place in Gaza.

These killings are not just an intolerable moral outrage, but a terrifying precedent and serious threat to press freedom everywhere.
