After such a presidential campaign, it is high time the media understood their social and political responsibility after having played a role in helping a person like Trump become the head of state. Going forward, it will be imperative that they take more seriously their critical role of holding power to account and not play along with this demented demagogue, who will no doubt utilize the press and social media as he did during the campaign.
The battle will be fought on all levels and Ricochet will no doubt be on the front lines, bringing you critical viewpoints, pertinent analysis and original articles that will not slip into the kind of sensationalism on which the new U.S. president thrives. We have never been more impacted by what’s happening with our neighbours to the south, and we are not safe from the gaffes and unstable politics of the New Yorker whom our prime minister is already encouraging on some files. We will need to be doubly vigilant and critical.
Whatever its size, it’s now the mobilization that counts in all spheres of society. And that will be the case for at least the next four years to come.
